Department of Aging Releases Updated Consumer's Guide to Long-Term Care Insurance

SACRAMENTO-California Department of Aging (CDA) today announced that an updated consumer's guide to long-term care, "Taking Care of Tomorrow," is now available at no cost to help Californian's make important decisions regarding long-term care.

This 76-page guide is available online at www.aging.ca.gov or by calling 1-800-434-0222. It provides a comprehensive overview of long-term care issues, including answers to frequently asked questions, an explanation of payment options, and a glossary of important long-term care terms. The guide was developed for people concerned about how to plan, provide, and pay for long-term care assistance. It offers help in deciding whether an individual needs long-term care insurance and if so, how to choose the plan most appropriate for them.

Insurance agents and brokers can obtain downloadable high resolution files for printing at www.aging.ca.gov.

"It is estimated that the number of people in Long-Term Care housing will triple by 2040. This booklet is a valuable tool for anyone considering long-term care insurance for themselves or their loved ones," said CDA Director Lynn Daucher. "By providing easily accessible information on this complex subject, we hope to help people retain more control of their lives when long-term care is needed. We suggest downloading or requesting a copy of this guide, sharing it with family and friends and using the information to begin discussing long-term care needs and financial options before a crisis arises."

The booklet was originally published in 1994 with a grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. CDA has published this new edition through a supplemental grant from the federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). California long-term care insurers and their agents and brokers are required by state law to provide this booklet to consumers prior to an insurance presentation.

This updated guide was produced by the Health Insurance Counseling and Advocacy Program (HICAP) of the California Department of Aging in conjunction with Bonnie Burns, Long-Term Care consultant. HICAP assists individuals and families with Medicare problems and other related health insurance concerns. In addition to long-term care information, local HICAP offices provide free community education and confidential individual counseling statewide on Medicare, Medicare supplement policies, and Medicare health maintenance organizations. For someone considering long-term care or Medicare-related insurance, HICAP counselors can help explain the coverage and compare policies. Call 1-800-434-0222 to be connected to the closest HICAP program office.

CDA administers a broad range of home- and community-based services, working primarily with 33 Area Agencies on Aging, which serve older adults throughout the state. CDA also works with other public and private nonprofit agencies throughout California to build a community-based system of services to enable older adults and adults with disabilities to remain independent.
